"Home For The Holidays: A Minnesota Christmas"

Home for the Holidays: A Minnesota Christmas CD and Concert Event produced by Phil Thompson-"This past year, I’ve been given a unique opportunity to produce a CD compilation and concert for a local non-profit, “Holiday Lights In The Park” which is a drive-through holiday lights event around Lake Phalen that pledges all proceeds to local non-profits" (http://www.lightsinthepark.org).

The CD compilation “Home For The Holidays: A Minnesota Christmas” features 15 acoustic performances of Minnesota’s most well-known musicians including: Tim Mahoney, The Blenders, GB Leighton, Katie McMahon, Mick Sterling, Mary Beth Carlson, Mick Sterling, John Trones, Ari Herstand, Roster McCabe, Matthew Griswold, Wild Colonial Bhoys, Cate Fierro, Peter Mayer, and Phil Thompson.

The CD will be available in limited quantities in all metro Target stores starting November 10th – easy to find on the new music end-cap right when you walk in the music section. Also, the CD ($9.99 retail) includes a free pass to the “Holiday Lights in the Park” event – a $10.00 value, and is donating all net proceeds to various Twin Cities charities including Second Harvest and Union Gospel Mission. Also – if you’re not from the Twin Cities, the music will be available on iTunes starting November 10th as well...

Please come and see this CD project come alive on December 10th at the historic Pantages Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. This one-night special performance will include sets from many of the artists on the CD and will be a great way to get in the holiday spirit. Tickets are available on the Hennepin Theatre District website and through Ticketmaster from $24 - $31; would love to see you at this event – thanks for supporting this event, I really appreciate it!

Taking Time For Self Reflection

Over the course of the last few months I have encountered a number of events that became a tad bit over whelming to my mind and body. A mental threshold as I would call it. After returning from Georgia with a new perspective on the life I have been living, I knew I had to take some time to get my thoughts in order. With my military life finally completely behind me, I feel that I have nothing to hold me back from what ever lies ahead. I feel as if I'm starting a new chapter in this saga. I'm a little unsure of what to expect, but looking forward to what ever it is.

I have been working on some new material and a number of songs have reveled themselves to me. I have been talking with friends and fellow musicians on a daily bases as to what I should do with them. "Should I set up some studio time?", "Should I throw them in the trash?", "Should I let them sit in my notebook until something else comes to me?". These are the questions that have been repetitively soaring through my head and my cell phone everyday. I haven't been playing many shows lately because of this needed personal time, but I have been playing alone a lot more than I think I ever have. Many times with friends in a living room, or by myself in my back yard with the noise of Dinkytown in the background. After much reflection, I have finally decided to cut a live album with these new songs and I'll will be doing that with my good friend and musical mentor, Davis Wilder. We have been working on the details on where we should record the show, and how we should go about arranging these songs. I'll have more details as to when and where this will take place soon, but for now I will be posting up some demos and hopefully giving you an idea on what's to come.

As a performer, I often think about the stage when I write songs anyway. When ever I find myself next to my bed with a cup of coffee, a guitar, and a notebook, I usually start to think of how I would play this on a stage if and when the time comes. I don't have a lot of studio experience, so that concept is still one that is relatively foreign to me. Which is why I feel that the best way to bring these new songs forward would be to capture them in the setting I create them for. This new project is one that I look forward to and I hope that you'll share that excitement with me. Your feedback will be very much considered as the details are put in place. As always, thank you for your support and we'll see ya at the cross road. -Matthew

Comin' Home

Hey everyone,

Well I've been down here in Georgia for over a week now, and living the "Army lifestyle" again. I must say that the toughest part about leaving was hearing from people on how much they were gong to miss coming out and watching shows and hearing me sing and talk about some of the things going on in the world. Throughout the week I've had a lot of time to think about how great it was back home, and how much so many people ment to me.

Ever since I've been out of the Army I have been so blessed to be able to get up on stages and entertain crowds, speak my mind, and actually have a positive response and reaction to it all. Those are things I used to only dream about. I was little hurt when I found out I had to leave that life behind and go back to a part of my life that I thought was over.

Well, someone upstairs must have felt the same way. I guess my calling is not to be back over seas or even back into the Army for that matter. I was declined enterence into the Army for a number of medical reasons. I will be back home with in a few days, and hopefully posting up shows shortly after that. I can't wait to see some of you agian, and thank you very much for your prayers and support. Keep in mind that there are a lot of folks down here that won't be going home and will be going back over seas. These men and women responded to that letter as well, and put there lifes on hold to do what there country asked of them. So please keep them in your prayers too. We're all in this together until it's all finally over.

We'll see ya soon,
Matthew
